Teaching & Tutoring

I’m an Adjunct English Professor with Union College of New Jersey, located in Cranford, New Jersey.

I teach students how to write with clarity and conciseness, but also bring a creative edge that makes their writing interesting.

Traditional rules are important, but advanced writing is crisp and to the point while also displaying a personal flair and conversational element.

I show students the tricks that help them write their teacher’s favorite papers–and earn college acceptance letters.

What I Cover in Private Tutoring:

  • Essay writing; narrative, argumentative, compare and contrast, research, etc.
  • Structuring, planning, and outlining
  • MLA, APA, and Chicago Manual of style citations
  • College essays; selecting a prompt, planning & executing

Other Specialties We Can Work On:

  • AP style newswriting
  • Blog and newsletter writing
  • Creative writing (fiction and nonfiction)

College essays can be perplexing, and what I’ve found is that students struggle to organize their narrative and present it–even at the college level.

And in the case of applying to schools, there’s the “competition” factor and an added pressure to be unique, intelligent, likable, memorable, creative…it’s intimidating.

I help students find sweet spots of inspiration to turn their stories and lessons into beautifully woven essays that produce college acceptance letters.

Essays I’ve worked on have seen admissions to colleges like University of South Carolina, College of Charleston, West Chester University, Ramapo College, Scranton University, Montclair State University, and Seton Hall University.

I tutor locally in Union County, New Jersey, and prefer to meet students at local libraries. For rates and availability…

Why tutoring AND college planning?

My expertise goes well beyond writing and editing. I’m currently an Executive Producer for a podcast production company, but I’ve also worked as a news writer and producer for SiriusXM and producer at CBS Radio and the MLB Network. I worked in digital advertising for Turner Broadcasting. I spent a few years QA testing financial management software and traveled to the headquarters of banking institutions like Deutsche Bank and Freddie Mac to teach employees how to use the product. I was eventually selected to rewrite the software manual and employee training materials.

What I continue to do across every industry is translate difficult concepts into digestible information.

If your student is either in or going to college, there’s strategy to succeeding that involves more than good grades (and, there’s even strategy to get good grades that has nothing to do with graded assignments!). I landed my first interview at CBS Radio through a connection supplied by one of my undergraduate professors, which ultimately set the stage for my entire career–and it took planning to get there.

So we can always talk about writing, but if a student is interested, we can also talk about how to develop good relationships with professors, deciding on an internship, what you can do with an English, communications, or journalism degree, and why graduate school may or may not be the move to make after the bachelor’s degree.
